in Koufonisia

A family story that began with brushwood, clay and hard work, and continues to this day with the same passion.

GIORGOULA BAKERY

A story connected to the island

Giorgoula Bakery is more than just a bakery. It is part of everyday life in Koufonisia, a place that grew together with the island and continues to offer fresh bread, traditional flavors and warm hospitality to locals and visitors.

It all started in 1974

The story of the bakery began in 1974, with Michalis Mavros and his wife, Maria Venetsanou.

In those years, the bakery operated with brushwood and fire clay. They brought soil from Kato Koufonisi, carried water from the beach, turned it into clay and used it to build and maintain the oven.

Back then, Giorgoula was only 12 years old. She grew up beside the bakery, surrounded by the smells of bread, dough and everyday work.

From brushwood and clay

The beginning of the bakery was not easy. It took effort, handmade work and people who made almost everything with their own hands, from the bread to the oven itself.

The bakery grew together with the island

Over time, electricity arrived and the bakery changed. A new oven followed, one that needed both electricity and fuel oil to operate, a technology of its time that could not work without one or the other.

1974

Michalis and Maria baked with brushwood and a traditional oven.

After electricity

The bakery entered a new era, with a system that needed both electricity and fuel oil.

1984

A German rack oven was installed, more modern for the needs of the time.
